Soumik Datta is a British composer and sarod player based in the United Kingdom, working within Indian classical and related fusion contexts. He is trained by the sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, and his playing is described as drawing on the elegant and poignant qualities of the instrument’s traditional style.

Career and output

Datta has authored three albums and is recognised as a significant young British figure in the Indian classical music world. His work combines solo performance with collaborations across different musical settings, and he develops music that connects the improvisational aspects of Indian classical tradition with orchestral writing, electronica and film influences.

Collaborations and projects

He tours and performs with a wide range of artists, including Talvin Singh, Beyoncé, Shankar Mahadevan and Bill Bailey. He also leads a world fusion band called Samay.

Awards and education

Datta has won several awards in both India and the UK. He is also studying for a Masters in Composition at Trinity College of Music.
