Soothsayers

Soothsayers are a London-based group active since 1998. They work across afro-jazz, afrobeat, dub and reggae, and their music combines these styles with funk and jazz-influenced elements.

The group describes its approach as a fusion of nu afrobeat and dub, shaped by movement between cultures and aimed at audiences from different backgrounds. Their live reputation is central to their identity, and they are noted for energetic performances.

Music and releases

Their debut album Lost City draws on jazz and African music. The follow-up Tangled Roots brings in funk and hip-hop alongside afrobeat and reggae. One More Reason places dub more prominently, alongside afrobeat rhythms and horn arrangements.

Line-up

The group includes Patrick Hatchett, Robin Hopcraft, Westley Joseph, Kishon Khan, Kodjovi Kush and Idris Rahman. A listed touring line-up also includes Adesose Wallace on vocals and percussion, Phil Dawson and Jonny Phillips on guitar, Patrick Illingworth on drums, and Eustace Williams on bass. Idris Rahman appears on saxophone and vocals, while Robin Hopcraft appears on trumpet and vocals.
