Sonny Wharton
Sonny Wharton is a UK DJ and producer working in dance and house music, with releases that also sit in tech house and progressive house. He runs Whartone Records and releases singles on labels including Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Skint. His productions receive support from Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and Mark Knight, and he is known for a steady flow of releases and for keeping his own label active.
Production and remixes
Wharton remixes artists including Fatboy Slim, Frankie Knuckles and The Temper Trap. He earns a reputation for strong studio work and is described by The Shapeshifters as one of the most prolific producers in the scene. Toolroom also refers to him as a certified member of the house music elite.
DJ career
As a DJ, Wharton rises to wider attention after winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance. That leads to appearances in Ibiza at Amnesia, a weekly residency at Manumission, and inclusion among Mixmag’s original Future Heroes alongside Nic Fanciulli. He also holds a monthly residency in Barcelona and plays major clubs and events including Space, Pacha and Ministry of Sound.
Festival and media work
Wharton appears at events such as Global Gathering, V Festival, Wickerman and the Isle of Wight Festival, and performs to more than 1 million people at the Berlin Love Parade. He also records three guest mixes for BBC Radio 1, gives live interviews, and appears on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show and MTV.
Brands and projects
Outside the booth, Wharton acts as UK ambassador for Ortofon and Ecler, appearing at international trade shows and in their advertising. He also develops his own Sound Of Whartone events in London and is linked with collaborations with X-Press 2 and DJ Chus.
