Son of Eagle
Son of Eagle is a UK folk group formed in the Midlands in 2009 by Benjamin Edmonds and Dean Collier, with Sarah Lloyd joining after being invited to a rehearsal. The group develops a sound described in the text as a meeting of traditional folk, nu folk and a country influence.
Formation and early work
Edmonds, who is already in another band, Tilted Smile, starts Son of Eagle as a separate writing project. The group spends its early period rehearsing in small rooms and refining a set of original songs. The first completed pieces are Count Twice, Like Me, I Like You and Picture.
Once the band settles on its material, it creates a website and begins sending details to regional venues, which leads to live bookings. Son of Eagle then builds a following through regular performances and also supports the Norwegian singer-songwriter Thomas Dybdahl.
Recording and releases
The band records its first EP in Ben's spare room using a single microphone. That EP appears in March 2010 and is later available for download on iTunes and other major download sites, as well as through HMV branches in Nottingham, Derby and Burton on Trent and on the HMV website. The artist entry is also associated with compilations.
Son of Eagle is described as being BBC Introduced and as being requested to play the Acoustic Festival of Britain.
Band members
Benjamin Edmonds handles lead vocals and guitar and is credited with writing songs that draw on personal feeling and unusual sources of inspiration. Dean Collier plays guitar and contributes hooks and intricate guitar parts. Sarah Lloyd plays strings and is a classically trained violist who spends part of her university years in Paris.
Phil Thompson plays bass and adds melodic bass lines and harmony vocals. Dave Hart plays drums and percussion, bringing rhythm to the group's live sound.
Background and style
The band's members come from different musical backgrounds, which the text presents as central to the way the group works. Edmonds spends his youth developing skills on computers and drums. Collier is described as a working artist and a maker of Son of Eagle's wing logo used on merchandise. Thompson learns guitar to impress women and is associated with the Peak District real ale pub scene. Hart develops his drumming in local working men's clubs and is noted for an interest in tea and biscuits.
