Solar Fields
Solar Fields is the electronic music project of Magnus Birgersson, a composer and graphic designer from Gothenburg, Sweden. His work develops around ambient, ambient techno, downtempo, progressive psytrance, psybient and psytrance, with a style that uses atmospheric, deep, industrial and organic textures alongside subtle contrasts.
Background and earlier work
Before starting Solar Fields in 2001, Birgersson is active in music from his teenage years, playing drums, percussion, piano and keyboards in different bands. He also works as a sound designer and multi-instrumentalist, using sampling, sequencing, morphing and programming, as well as sitar, veena and guitars. Outside album work, he collaborates with art galleries and museums, including a sound installation at Trabekel in Sandviken in spring 2004, presented in sync with the visual work of Antonio Sognasoldi and designed so that four pieces can play at once and change according to the visitor’s position in the gallery.
Recordings and releases
Solar Fields signs with Ultimae Records and releases Reflective Frequencies in 2001 as the debut album. In November 2005, Leaving Home and the limited edition Extended appear. EarthShine follows in 2007, then Movements, which contains the track “Sol”, identified as his most popular piece. In 2010, he releases Altered - Second Movements and Origin # 01.
Video game soundtrack work
In 2008, Birgersson works on the soundtrack for Mirror's Edge, the Electronic Arts video game issued in 2009.
