Slide

Slide is a name used by several different acts in different genres and countries. The name appears on psychedelic trance, alternative rock, folk, indie rock, hardcore and shoegaze releases, as well as on projects from the United States, Scotland, Ireland, Leeds, Romania, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Psychedelic trance

One Slide project is credited to Pete Martin, who works as a psychedelic trance producer in the 1990s. Another is a French trance artist, and a separate project under the same name is a gabber and hardcore act by German producer Andreas Hühn.

Alternative rock and indie rock

One Slide is an alternative rock four-piece from the United States. The group forms in the 1980s and appears on REX Records in the 1990s. Its line-up includes James Preston on vocals and keyboards, Mike Baker on drums, programming and guitar, Chris Berry on lead guitar, and Jeff Lantry on bass guitar.

Another Slide is a short-lived indie band from Joure in the Netherlands. Frontman Theo de Jong previously plays with The Serenes and then forms Simmer, which first uses the name Slide. Under that name the band releases one vinyl 7-inch single on the Amsterdam label Electrolux, before continuing as Simmer.

A further Slide is a Swedish indie-rock duo whose debut EP, Into Happiness, appears in 2019.

Scottish rock

Slide is also the name of a band from Glasgow, Scotland, formed in the 1980s. The group tours with GUN and Texas and releases the album Down So Long. Its best-known song from that record is Why is it a crime? The line-up includes Kenny Paterson on lead guitar, Richard Hynd on drums, Scott Fraser on bass and Grant Richardson on vocals and acoustic guitar. Hynd later plays with Texas.

Folk and traditional music

Another Slide is an Irish traditional group made up of Éamonn de Barra on flute, whistles, keyboard and vocals; Aogán Lynch on concertina, whistles and vocals; Daire Bracken on fiddle, guitar and vocals; and Mick Broderick on bouzouki, mandolin and vocals. The members also have individual recognition: de Barra is named young musician of the year 2000, Lynch is TG4 young musician of the year 1999, Bracken is a founder member of Danú, and Broderick is associated with IMM band of the year 1999.

There is also a Leeds-based acoustic Slide that plays traditional songs and tunes from Celtic, English and American traditions, alongside original material. The group includes Tom Bliss, Derek Magee, Neil Russell Whitaker, John Layton and, at larger gigs, Rod Taylor. Bliss and Magee write and arrange tunes, while Bliss and Whitaker contribute songs. The band’s sound draws on folk, bluegrass, rock and pop.

Other acts using the name

Another Slide is a youthful Romanian band combining alternative rock and funk with jazz and indie elements. A separate heavy shoegaze band from Philadelphia is also called Slide and is influenced by Whirr and Nothing.
