Slice the Cake

Slice the Cake is a worldwide online metal collaboration formed in 2009 and active until 2022. The group works as a virtual band and brings together three musicians from different countries: vocalist Gareth Mason from England, guitarist and drummer Jonas Johansson from Sweden, and bassist Jack Richardson from Australia. It starts as a duo with Mason and Johansson before Richardson joins later in the same year.

Style and working method

The band combines deathcore, metalcore, progressive metal and technical death metal, with symphonic elements also appearing in the music. It describes itself as a DIY band and self-produces its recordings and cover art.

Releases

Slice the Cake first creates a demo for the track “Cleansed”, with Mason on vocals and Johansson handling guitar, drum programming and production. The track later gives its name to the group’s debut EP, which appears in 2010. The band follows with its debut full-length, The Man With No Face, and later releases Other Slices in the same year as that album.

Origins

The project begins after the members meet on the UltimateMetal and Ultimate-Guitar websites. Its lineup and distributed working process define it as an internet-based metal collaboration rather than a conventional local band.
