Skálmöld

Skálmöld is a metal band from Reykjavík, Iceland, formed in 2009 and active since then. The group plays folk metal and viking metal, with music that combines melodic and epic arrangements, Icelandic atmosphere and folk elements. Its sound is described as drawing on influences that include Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Iron Maiden and the Icelandic composer Jón Leifs.

Style and lyrics

The band’s lyrics follow the rules of traditional Icelandic poetry. This gives the songs a formal poetic structure as well as a strong connection to Icelandic literary tradition. The band is also associated with melodic death metal and pagan metal.

Early releases and debut album

Skálmöld records a two-song demo tape in January 2010, which helps define the band’s sound. A few months later, the group enters the studio to record its debut album, Baldur, a concept album telling the story of the Icelandic viking Baldur. In November 2010, the band signs with the Faeroese label Tutl to release and distribute the album internationally.

Line-up

The band consists of Björgvin Sigurðsson, Snæbjörn Ragnarsson, Baldur Ragnarsson, Gunnar Ben, Jón Geir Jóhannsson and Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson. Baldur Ragnarsson and Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson play guitar, Björgvin Sigurðsson handles vocals and guitar, Snæbjörn Ragnarsson plays bass, Gunnar Ben plays keyboards, and Jón Geir Jóhannsson plays drums.
