Signals

Signals is an improvised electronics and droneworks group that forms in 2004 and is active from then to the present. The core line-up consists of Chris Gowers, Phil Julian and Mark Beazley.

Formation and members

The group forms in summer 2004, initially for a collaborative performance at the 2004 London Headphone Festival. Chris Gowers and Phil Julian begin the project together, and after a number of live collaborations Mark Beazley joins in November 2005, establishing the main line-up. Gowers is associated with Karina ESP and Trome Records, Julian with Cheapmachines and Authorised Version, and Beazley with Rothko.

The instrumentation given for this line-up is Bowed Electric Guitar for Chris Gowers, Bass Guitar for Mark Beazley, and Bowed Gong, Cymbal, Temple Bowls, Electronics and Computers for Phil Julian.

Releases and labels

Signals has forthcoming releases on Authorised Version and Trace Recordings. Its first album, Lapis Sky, is noted as the first material produced by WELD MUSIC CHAMBER.

Other acts called Signals

There are several other acts using the name Signals. One is an instrumental project led by former BLANKEY JET CITY and current PONTIACS bassist Terui Toshiyuki, with Kyōichi Shiino on drums and Yūji Katsuki on violin. Another includes cousins Jon and Bill Gray and Jacob Cooper, all former touring members of The Mae Shi, who continue as Signals after The Mae Shi's end and first perform publicly under that name at Pitchfork Festival 2009. A further act uses the name for a line-up including Michael Jagmin and Jonathan Kintz.
