Siena Root
Siena Root is a Swedish psychedelic rock group from Stockholm, formed in 1997 and active since then. The band develops out of the Stockholm underground scene and is known for a sound built around heavy organ, Stratocaster-style lead guitar, bass riffs, large drums and blues-influenced, soulful vocals. Their music is generally associated with psychedelic rock, rock, progressive rock, folk and related hard-rock and stoner-rock styles.
History
In 2003, Siena Root signs to the English label Rage of Achilles. The following year, the band releases its debut album, A New Day Dawning, on CD and LP. In summer 2005, the line-up changes: Sanya replaces Oskar on vocals, and lead guitarist KG West also takes over Hammond duties.
Sound and performance
The band’s style combines classic rock structure with a heavy, rooty feel and an emphasis on extended playing. Touring shapes the music further, and jamming and improvisation become a central part of the group’s approach. Their live performances are described as dramatic and emotionally intense, with a strong visual element.
Name and label history
The name refers to the colour siena, an earthy shade associated with the roots of Tuscany, with “root” added to reflect the band’s emphasis on deep musical roots. Siena Root later works with Nasoni Records in Berlin on a vinyl single and is linked with Root Rock Records.
