SG Lewis is the recording name of Sam Lewis, a UK producer, songwriter and DJ from Reading, England, born in 1994. He works in alternative R&B, club, dance, disco, EDM and electronic music, and is known for an emotive, atmospheric style built around dance-oriented production.

Career

Lewis first becomes interested in music in his teens. Before releasing his own material, he plays in several bands and starts experimenting with remixing tracks. He then begins posting moody, self-produced songs online, which helps him build an audience. He also earns a DJ residency at Chibuku Club in London.

His profile rises through remixes, including work on Jessie Ware’s “You & I (Forever),” which leads to a signing with PMR Records. He releases his debut EP, Shivers, in 2015. His second EP, Yours, follows in 2016 and includes “Holding Back,” a collaboration with Gallant.

Releases and collaborations

Lewis works with a number of vocalists and artists across his early releases, including Gallant, Ray BLK, Bishop Nehru, Toulouse, J Warner and Clairo. In 2017 he issues the Toulouse-assisted single “Times We Had” and the solo track “Smart Aleck Kill.” In 2018 he returns with “Aura,” featuring J Warner.

That track appears on Dusk, the first EP in a three-part series centred on club culture. The wider project is set to continue under the combined title Dusk, Dark, Dawn. His later singles include “Blue” and “Throwaway,” the latter a collaboration with Clairo.

Style and influences

Lewis’s music draws on the introspective pop of Bon Iver and James Blake, alongside the club-oriented hip-hop production associated with Common, Timbaland and the Neptunes. His work combines electronic production with a reflective, low-key tone.
