Sean Smith

Sean Smith is an American instrumental musician and experimental composer from California. He is from Northern California and begins releasing albums after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003. His work starts in solo acoustic guitar and American primitive forms, but later expands into electric guitar, ensemble writing and a power trio format.

Early solo work

Smith’s first two LPs, Sean Smith and Sacred Crag Dancer, Corpse Whisperer, are solo acoustic guitar recordings in a John Fahey-influenced American primitive style. They are released by Isota Records in 2005 and 2006. These records lead to attention from Tompkins Square Records and to the compilations Berkeley Guitar and Beyond Berkeley Guitar, which he curates and produces himself.

Collaborative and electric work

In 2006, Smith releases Eternal, a collaborative album that is first issued as a limited vinyl release on Gnome Life Records and later reissued on CD by Strange Attractors Audio House. The album broadens his sound, adding electric guitar and a noise rock element alongside acoustic ensemble playing. It also draws comparisons with Sandy Bull and Dirty Three.

His 2011 album Huge Fluid Freedom is produced by Tim Green of the Fucking Champs and Nation of Ulysses and released by Strange Attractors Audio House. It reflects a more developed approach to composing for electric guitar and ensemble, combining solo acoustic passages with cinematic soundscapes, dark folk, krautrock and doom metal.

Style, touring and recognition

Smith continues to perform live and in the studio with a strong emphasis on guitar technique and experimentation. He tours extensively in the United States and Europe, with particular focus on California. His work appears on compilations from Takoma Records and Tompkins Square, and it receives recognition from Acoustic Guitar magazine and The New York Times for his contributions to American primitive guitar.

Later activities

Smith joins the band Citay in 2008 and plays lead guitar with the group for three years, contributing to recordings and touring in North America. In 2010, he releases Christmas, an album of holiday tunes, on Tompkins Square Records.
