Sea of Bees
Sea of Bees is the solo project of Sacramento vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Julie Ann Bee, also known as Julie Baenziger. The project is based in Sacramento, United States. Bee performs under the name Jules to those close to her.
Recording and early releases
Bee begins attracting attention after singing in Tape Op Magazine publisher John Baccigaluppi’s studio, The Hangar. That meeting leads to collaboration between the two, with Baccigaluppi producing Sea of Bees recordings. Her early output includes the EP Bee Eee Pee and an LP, both first releases for the project.
Style and sound
Sea of Bees is associated with folk and indie folk, with an acoustic and mellow feel. The recording style places emphasis on Bee’s voice, which is heard as emotive, haunting and direct, alongside precise arrangements and clear production. Instruments such as electric guitar are present but used sparingly, with the vocal performance and emotional delivery remaining central.
Notable album
Songs for the Ravens is an important release in the project’s catalogue and is presented as a strong example of Sea of Bees’ approach, built from collaboration and careful production.
