Samantha Mumba
Samantha Mumba is an Irish contemporary R&B and pop singer-songwriter, dancer, actress, fashion model and television presenter. Born in Ireland in 1983, she trains from the age of 3 to 15 at Dublin’s Billie Barry Stage School, a well-known performing arts school.
Early work and breakthrough
In 1998, Mumba is cast in the lead role in The Hot Mikado, a jazz version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera. She also appears in several Irish television programmes and uses those appearances to build recognition as a singer. At 15, she is discovered in a nightclub by Louis Walsh, who manages Boyzone and Westlife, and she is signed to Polydor Records.
She then spends several months working between Denmark, Sweden, England and Ireland on her debut album, Gotta Tell You, which she co-writes and records. She leaves school to concentrate on her music career.
Recording success
Her debut single, “Gotta Tell You”, is released in 2000 and reaches number one on three Irish charts, number two in the United Kingdom and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The album remains on the charts for six months, is certified Platinum for shipments of one million copies, and goes on to sell more than four million copies worldwide. The record produces five further UK Top 10 singles and another US Top 50 hit. Mumba is sometimes described as the “black Britney Spears”, a label she rejects.
Later releases and awards
In 2002, she is nominated for a Grammy Award for “Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night)” in the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category. She prepares a second album, Woman, but after the lead single “I’m Right Here” performs poorly in the US and UK, she is dropped by her label and the album is cancelled.
In 2006, she collaborates with Filipino artist Jay-R on “Just The Way You Are”. She later posts three new songs, “Candyland”, “Turn The Beat Up” and “Bad Boy”, on her MySpace and YouTube profiles in 2008.
Return to music and screen work
Mumba resumes her acting work and is attached to the Irish horror film Loftus Hall. She confirms a musical comeback in 2013 and appears on RTÉ’s The Hit with “Somebody Like Me”, which is released on iTunes and reaches number five on the Irish Singles Chart, becoming her first hit single in 11 years.
In 2020, she releases “Cool”, which she describes as sexier, different and more adult, followed by “Process”, written after the death of her father. She releases “The Lie” in 2023 and “My Way” in 2025. “My Way” is also selected for Eurosong 2025, Ireland’s national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, where she finishes second with 26 points.
