Sam Carter is an English singer, guitarist and songwriter from the United Kingdom. Originally from the English Midlands and later based in Sheffield, he works mainly in the folk and roots area and releases a series of albums built largely around original material.

Career

Carter studies guitar with Martin Simpson and, early in his career, supports artists including Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Davey Graham, Spiers & Boden, Findlay Brown and John Smith. In 2007 he takes part in a collaborative project with Nitin Sawhney, which leads to a performance at the Royal Festival Hall and his appointment as Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre.

He also supports Bellowhead on their Matachin album launch tour, playing to capacity crowds at venues across the UK, including Koko in London. In 2010 he wins the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards “Horizon” award for best newcomer.

Releases

Carter releases his second album, The No Testament, followed by his third album, How The City Sings. He later releases his fourth studio album, Home Waters.

Other projects

He is one half of False Lights and later partners with fellow roots musician Jim Moray in a folk rock project under the same name. He is also associated with Sweet Liberties.
