Salami Rose Joe Louis is the music project of Bay Area producer Lindsay Olsen. Olsen is raised in San Diego and plays in punk bands while growing up before moving to Crockett, California, after college. She begins working as a climate scientist while also developing her own compositions, and later turns to music full time.
Career
She starts releasing music under the Salami Rose Joe Louis name, a title formed from a combination of two childhood nicknames. The project focuses on insular, sketch-like songs built around synthesizers and cosmic imagery. Olsen’s early releases are Son of a Sauce! in 2016 and Zlaty Sauce Nephew in 2017, both made up of short, wobbly pop experiments and drifting beats.
After Zlaty Sauce Nephew, Olsen is involved in a car accident that leaves her with minor injuries and prevents her from working for several weeks. During that period, one of her songs is used in a commercial, and these events contribute to her decision to pursue music full time. She tours with Toro y Moi and signs to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label.
Brainfeeder release
Brainfeeder releases Zdenka 2080 in 2019. The album is a collection of short pieces that combine experimental pop, abstract beats and bedroom R&B, tied together by a dystopian science-fiction narrative. It follows her first two independent albums and becomes her third album overall.
Style
Her work is associated with neo-psychedelia, hypnagogic pop, dream pop and art pop, and is marked by warped, abstract song structures and a strong use of electronic texture.
