Sage Francis is a hip-hop artist from Miami, United States, based in Providence, Rhode Island. Born in 1976, he is known for an intense delivery, battle-rapping background and densely written lyrics that often address personal, cultural and political subjects. His work sits within hip hop and underground hip hop, and he is associated with Strange Famous Records.
Early work and Providence scene
Before becoming a full-time MC, Francis performs slam poetry. In the late 1990s, he records his first demo tape in 1996, fronts the Providence hip-hop group Art Official Intelligence, and hosts a weekly show on independent radio station WRIU called the True School Session. Art Official Intelligence later becomes defunct. He is also a contemporary of underground hip-hop artists including Slug, Eyedea, Sole and the anticon. collective, and is loosely affiliated with The Orphanage.
Battle rap and solo albums
Francis wins the MC battle at Scribble Jam in 2000 and reaches the semi-finals in 2001 while performing as his metal alter ego, Xaul Zan. His first solo album, Personal Journals, appears on Anticon. in 2002 and leads to the Live Band Dead Poet Tour, where he tours with a live band. He becomes the first hip-hop artist to sign to the punk label Epitaph, taking a three-album deal. His Epitaph releases include A Healthy Distrust and Human the Death Dance, followed by Li(f)e and Copper Gone.
Non-Prophets and other projects
Francis forms the Non-Prophets and releases the 12-inch Drop Bass/Bounce/I Keep Calling on Emerge Records in 1999, followed by the full-length Hope in 2003. He also fronts the Providence group Art Official Intelligence and is linked to the project AOI. He is part of Epic Beard Men as well as Non-Prophets.
Labels, collaborations and related work
Francis founds Strange Famous Records, which takes its name from his initials, and releases later work through it. The label includes artists such as Buck 65, Prolyphic and Reanimator, and Human the Death Dance features appearances by Buddy Wakefield, Buck 65 and Reanimator. Francis also sets up the website Wiki KnowMore.org, described as a way to monitor major businesses.
Notable tracks and themes
One of Francis’s best-known tracks is Makeshift Patriot, written about the American media one month after the September 11 attacks and issued as both an MP3 and a limited 7-inch single. On A Healthy Distrust, tracks such as The Buzz Kill, Slow Down Gandhi, Bridle and Gunz Yo show the mix of political, personal and satirical writing that runs through his catalogue. Li(f)e includes The Best Of Times, which receives significant radio play on BBC Radio 1.
Style and personal outlook
Francis is described as using a wide emotional range and having crossover appeal, although his unusual style also puts off some hip-hop listeners. He is a vegetarian and avoids drugs and alcohol, but does not describe himself as straight-edge.
