Ron Wood

Ronald David Wood is an English guitarist, singer-songwriter, painter and writer from Hillingdon, United Kingdom. He is best known as a member of The Rolling Stones, which he joins in 1975, and he also records under the names Ron Wood and Ronnie Wood.

Early life and background

Wood is born in 1947 in Hillingdon, London, England, and is raised in a musical family. His older brothers, Art and Ted, are active in the skiffle and traditional jazz scenes.

Bands and collaborations

Before joining The Rolling Stones, Wood performs in the London mod scene with The Birds, which dissolves in 1966, and briefly with The Creation. He later works with Rod Stewart as a songwriter and backing musician in the Faces, and he meets Stewart while both are employed in the Jeff Beck Group in the late 1960s. His wider career includes membership of the Jeff Beck Group, Santa Barbara Machine Head, Quiet Melon, Transatlantic Session Band, The Ronnie Wood Band, Ronnie Wood with his Wild Five, Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes, Supergroup B, The New Barbarians and The Rolling Stones.

Solo work and other projects

Wood records several solo studio and live albums. Some of these are credited to Ron Wood, while others appear under Ronnie Wood. He is also an accomplished painter and publishes an autobiography titled Ronnie in 2007.
