Romeo's Daughter

Romeo's Daughter is a British rock group from the United Kingdom, active since 1985. The band forms around Leigh Matty and Craig Joiner, and its current line-up also includes Andy Wells on drums and Steve Drennan on bass. It begins in 1985 as a trio with Leigh Matty, Craig Joiner and Tony Mitman.

Career and releases

The group records its self-titled debut album in 1988 with producers Mutt Lange and John Parr. The album includes the singles “Don't Break My Heart”, “I Cry Myself to Sleep at Night” and “Heaven in the Back Seat”, the last of which appears in the fifth film in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Their second album, Delectable, follows in 1993. The band takes a direct role in its production, alongside co-producer Andy Reilly. The record includes the lead single “Attracted to the Animal”. Although it receives positive critical attention, it does not sell strongly, and the band splits soon after.

Romeo's Daughter re-forms in 2009 and tours extensively, leading to the release of the Romeo's Daughter Live EP. Their third studio album, Rapture, follows in 2012 and includes “Bittersweet” and “Alive”. In 2015, they release Spin, which the band describes as having slightly darker lyrics than earlier material. In 2020, they release the Organik EP, which contains acoustic versions of tracks from their back catalogue. Their fifth studio album is Slipstream.

Recognition and covers

Leigh Matty is named by Classic Rock magazine as the fifth best rock singer of all time in a 2012 article. The band’s songs are also covered by other artists: Bonnie Tyler records “I Cry Myself to Sleep at Night”, Heart records “Wild Child”, Eddie Money records “Heaven in the Back Seat”, and Steps records “Stay with Me Tonight”.
