Robyn Sherwell is a UK singer-songwriter from Guernsey who is based in London. She works in pop and indie pop, and her writing and voice draw comparisons with artists including James Blake, Imogen Heap, Bat For Lashes and Stevie Nicks.

Career

Sherwell signs to Birdland Records in 2013 after YouTube cover versions of Ben Howard’s “The Fear” and SBTRKT’s “Hold On” attract attention. She then works with producer David Kosten, known for work with Everything Everything and Bat For Lashes, on a debut album.

Her first single, “Love Somebody”, appears as the lead track on an EP that also includes the earlier blog favourite “Low” and a remix of “LS” by Glasgow producer Turtle. The release draws notice from DIY, Clash, Q, Indie Shuffle, HillyDilly, Pigeons and Planes and NME, and also receives radio support from Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 and Simon Raymonde on Amazing Radio and XFM.

Music and themes

Across her songs, Sherwell focuses on emotion, with themes including hometown pride, love, lust and heartbreak. Her material is described through strong hooks and a distinctive vocal style.

She also releases “Islander”, a track inspired by her youth in Guernsey, which highlights her pop songwriting and defiant tone.

Live activity

Sherwell appears at The Great Escape, Pete The Monkey in France, FarmFestival in Somerset and Norwich Sound And Vision in summer 2014. She also plays a headline show at The Islington in London and a show at the Sebright Arms.
