Right Said Fred

Right Said Fred are an English pop and dance-pop band from East Grinstead, United Kingdom. The group is made up of Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, Robert Manzoli and Mark Price. Fred and Richard Fairbrass begin performing as Right Said Fred in 1989 after years of touring in Britain and the United States, and Robert Manzoli joins in 1990.

Breakthrough

Their debut single, “I’m Too Sexy”, appears in 1991. It is a tongue-in-cheek dance track sung from the viewpoint of a vain male fashion model. The song becomes a major hit in the UK, where it spends six weeks at number two behind Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You”, and it reaches number one in the United States. It also becomes an international hit. The instrumental break is based on the chorus of Cozy Powell’s 1974 instrumental “Dance With the Devil”. A remix appears in 2007 by Tastemakers!

Singles and albums

The band’s second single, “Don’t Talk Just Kiss”, features Jocelyn Brown and reaches number three in the UK. Their third single, “Deeply Dippy”, becomes their first and only UK number one. These releases lead to their debut album Up. They follow it with Sex and Travel in 1993 and a third album, Smashing.

Later work

After not attracting much interest in the UK, the band works in Germany with Alex Christensen and U96. This leads to the single “You’re My Mate” and the album Fredhead in 2002. “You’re My Mate” reaches number five on the German Top 100, spends 23 weeks in the chart, and also reaches the Top 20 in the UK. It gains gold status in South Africa and is used as the official anthem of the South African national rugby team in 2002. Fredhead reaches number two in Germany, and both the single and album achieve gold status in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Their later album For Sale follows after Rob Manzoli leaves the group.
