Reso

Reso is a UK dubstep producer and DJ, also known as Alex Melia. His music draws on dubstep, breaks, techno and drum and bass, with a strong emphasis on breakbeat rhythms and dense percussion. He starts making beats in 2002 after getting a computer and cracked software, initially working across different styles before moving into tear-out breaks and drum and bass, then into dubstep.

Background and style

Melia grows up in London and plays drums for a number of bands, including Jamie Woon’s band, after originally hoping to become a jazz drummer. As a producer, he is described through tracks such as Metal Slug, Identity and Holograms, which show his interest in heavy guitars, techno-influenced structures and sub-bass-heavy, layered sound design. His work is often presented as more complex and textured than minimal dubstep.

Releases and collaborators

Reso puts out material on Storming Productions, Destructive, Urban Graffiti and Skud. He works with Burial as an engineer on Burial’s remix of Jamie Woon’s Wayfaring Stranger, and he remixes The Dubstitutes’ 2 Faced Rasta (Dubting). His music also receives support from figures including Mary Anne Hobbs, who commissions a 20-minute mix for her BBC Radio 1 Breezeblock show in January 2007, and from Benga, N-Type, Walsh and Rusko.

DJ activity

He tours widely as a DJ, playing across the UK and in mainland Europe, with appearances in cities including Newcastle, Nottingham and London.
