Red Rum
Red Rum is a Russian emo/metalcore group from Saint Petersburg, active since 2011. The band is also described as working in experimental rock, with material that draws on alternative rock, progressive and art-rock elements.
Style and sound
Red Rum’s music combines alternative rock, psychedelic passages, adventurous indie influences, electronics and surreal details. Earlier releases are described as containing aggressive musicianship, gothic touches, guitar noise and everyday sounds. The band’s later work is framed around darker themes, with songs concerned with life, loss and the future direction of humanity.
Members
The group consists of Ndk on vocals, guitar and electronics, Eugene Byrd on bass, and Gorsky on drums.
Releases and recordings
Red Rum’s recorded output includes four EPs and one album, with studio releases featuring the band’s live line-up from 2004 to 2010. Their early demos are Let me live in prison of my days and Pleasure area, both from 2004. They then release the EP Faithcontrol in 2006, the LP Recognito in 2008, and the single Angels' Roar in 2010.
The band’s first full-length album appears on its own label. Recognito is presented as a record that brings together ideas the group develops on earlier releases, moving from harder rock tracks into quieter sections and darker imagery. Angels' Roar uses gospel-style touches, dark orchestral elements, acoustic guitars and a strong rhythmic base.
Live work and recognition
Red Rum completes a Baltic tour in 2011, with shows in Riga, Kaunas and Vilnius. The band also undertakes Russian mini-tours in 2009 and 2010. Its work receives attention from European underground labels and fanzines, including Savage Recordings, Blissaquamarine and Ebus Music. Other notable points include airplay on Radio Roks in Saint Petersburg, a cover appearance in Audioformat magazine in June 2009, and a special prize for originality in a National Depeche Mode covers challenge.
Video
The band’s videography includes Paranormal from 2008.
