Rebekah
Rebekah is a singer-songwriter from Cleveland, United States, and the name is also used by a techno DJ and producer from Birmingham, England, and a British singer-songwriter who later performs under the name Rebekah Johnson.
Techno DJ and producer
As a techno artist, Rebekah works in techno, minimal techno, tech house, minimal and electronic music. She builds her sound around concepts, sounds, feelings, energy and art, and cites the harder side of techno as a major influence. Her early interest in the style grows from nights at the Que Club in Birmingham, where she hears sets from Dave Clarke, Derrick Carter, Richie Hawtin and Billy Nasty.
Her early releases appear on Naked Lunch, Smut Music and Cult Figures. A remix of Matador’s “Blond Slackers” on Stolen Moments brings her wider attention, and Chris Liebing invites her to record for the CLR podcast series, beginning a continuing association with the label. She mixes “Reconnected 03” for CLR in 2013, and her “Cycles” EP appears later that year, becoming a key release in her break-through period.
In 2014 she releases remixes for EarToGround, Sleaze and Gynoid Audio, and follows them with another EP for Cult Figures. She also issues her first “Elements” EP, part of a series based on the four elements of fire, air, water and earth and the effect they have on people’s lives. Her work with CLR continues into 2015 with the “Distant” EP, and she also releases a three-track EP on Sleaze and the “Confined Heart” EP on Soma Records. The title track of “Confined Heart” shows a more subtle, emotional side to her production, while “Kill Floor” is a tougher contrast.
In 2015 she launches an event series called Elements in Birmingham, intended as a showcase for her sound and for guests from the techno scene. Her career is presented as closely connected to Birmingham and to the city’s place in UK techno history.
Other artist with the same name
Another Rebekah is a singer-songwriter who releases the album Remember to Breathe in 1997 and has a top 40 single called “Sin So Well”. She appears at dates on the 1997 Lilith Fair tour, acts under the name Rebekah Johnson, and later returns to music with a style closer to jazz than to her earlier pop/rock/soul work.
