Prince Fatty

Prince Fatty is a UK-based soul and reggae act associated with dub, roots, skinhead reggae and early reggae. The project centres on a heavily analog sound, using vintage spring reverb, tape echo and a custom mixing console to create a rootsy, echo-filled style that draws on rock steady, funk and jazz-like arrangements.

Style and sound

The music is built around dub production techniques and early 1970s reggae influences. It combines organic funk, upbeat rhythms and layered instrumental textures, with a focus on the studio as part of the performance. The project is presented as a champion of dub-oriented reggae forms.

Collaborators and guest performers

Prince Fatty’s recordings and performances feature a guest line-up that includes drummer Style Scott of the Roots Radics, Hammond organ player Bubblers from the Ruff Cut Band, saxophonist Bukky Leo, the Nostalgia 77 Horn Section, and guest vocals from Little Roy, Winston Francis and Hollie Cook.

Little Roy is noted for work with Jackie Mittoo, Prince Buster, Lloyd “Matador” Daley, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Studio One, as well as songs including “Bongo Nyah”, “Black Bird” and “Tribal War”. Winston Francis is described as having worked with Carlos Malcolm, Derrick Harriott and Boris Gardiner, recorded at Studio One in Jamaica, and collaborated with Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Bob Andy.
