Pottery

Pottery are a Montréal-based Canadian garage punk and indie rock group whose sound draws on post-punk, art punk, dance-punk and crank wave, while also pulling in garage rock, psych rock, country and other influences. Their style is loose and genre-mixing, with references to cult acts such as Devo, Orange Juice and Josef K.

Formation and early line-up

The band forms soon after frontman Austin Boylan moves to Montréal and meets guitarist Jacob Shepansky through a mutual friend on his first day in the city. Boylan and Shepansky begin writing together after bonding over shared interests, including Josef K. Once they have a group of songs together, they bring in keyboardist Peter Baylis and drummer Paul Jacobs, whose garage rock band Boylan and Shepansky know from their teenage years. The band starts playing live in February 2017.

Recordings and releases

In June 2017, Pottery record an EP’s worth of songs with producer and singer-songwriter Renny Wilson over a couple of days. Their original bassist leaves the band in November 2017 and is replaced by Tom Gould, an English-born student at McGill University. Pottery remain relatively low profile until December 2018, when they release their debut single, “Hank Williams”. The song is the first Boylan and Shepansky write together and helps build interest in the band’s first EP, No. 1, which appears on Partisan Records in May 2019.

Debut album

For their first full-length album, Pottery work with producer Jonathan Schenke at Break Glass studio in Montréal. Welcome to Bobby’s Motel appears in 2020 and continues the band’s eclectic approach to garage punk and indie rock.
