Patrice Scott is a Detroit producer and DJ associated with deep house, deep techno and techno. He develops his own work through the Sistrum Recordings imprint, which he launches in October 2006.

Background

Scott comes from Detroit, where he first becomes interested in progressive dance music at the age of 13 after attending a neighbourhood party by the local group Sharevari. Early exposure to the city’s electronic music scene shapes his direction, along with the work of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and the Electrifying Mojo (Charles Johnson). He also listens to Chicago radio stations WBMX and WGCI, which feature artists and DJs including Chip E, Farley Jackmaster Funk and Larry Heard.

DJ work

After buying his first set of turntables, Scott develops his DJ technique and plays at venues across Detroit. He performs alongside Ken Collier and Jeff Mills, and holds a weekly residency at the Amsterdam Lounge in Windsor, Ontario under the promotional group Cybersoul T.Q.E.

Production and label work

Scott begins making remixes with two cassette recorders, a drum machine and turntables, initially from his basement. This work leads into a wider focus on studio production and his own label, Sistrum Recordings. The label’s first release, Atmospheric Emotions, receives strong reviews. His releases are later charted by artists and DJs including Levon Vincent, Efdemin, DJ Fader, Lawrence and Fred P.

Style

Scott is described as valuing substance, quality and diversity, and as aiming to create music that avoids convention. His work is rooted in Detroit’s house and techno tradition.
