Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny is an American jazz guitarist and composer from Lee's Summit, Missouri. Born in 1954, he works across contemporary jazz, jazz and jazz fusion, and is known as the leader of the Pat Metheny Group.

Career

Metheny first gains wider attention through his work with vibraphonist Gary Burton. He then builds a long career through the Pat Metheny Group, solo recordings, duets, collaborations and other side projects. His playing is noted for its midwestern sound and tone, as well as for technical control of the guitar. His compositions also receive recognition within jazz.

He appears with a wide range of musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Bill Stewart, Brad Mehldau and Jaco Pastorius. He also works in duos and smaller settings with figures such as Lyle Mays, Charlie Haden, Brad Mehldau, Dave Holland and Roy Haynes.

Groups and collaborations

His associated groups and projects include the Pat Metheny Trio, the Pat Metheny Group and the Kenny Garrett Quartet. He also records under the Pat Metheny Go-Forward label.
