Papangu

Papangu is a Brazilian progressive rock and avant-garde metal group from João Pessoa, active since 2012. The band’s music combines sludge metal texture with Brazilian syncopated rhythms, the traditional harmonies of Northeastern Brazil, and elements of jazz fusion and avant-metal. Their sound is also described through art rock, avant-prog, metal, progressive metal, progressive rock and zeuhl.

Style and influences

The group draws on a mix of heavy and experimental styles, with a sound built from colourful sludge, zeuhl and progressive structures. Their music also reflects Brazilian musical traditions, alongside broader influences associated with Hermeto Pascoal, Edu Lobo and Sepultura. The band’s work is marked by comparisons with King Crimson and Magma, and it emphasises both high intensity and Brazilian regional identity.

Albums

Papangu’s debut album is Holoceno, released in 2021 and described as a critically acclaimed first album. It begins a series of records focused on the Cangaço movement. Their second album, Lampião Rei, continues that theme and is recorded largely live in the studio as first takes. It is recorded by Fernando Sanches, a three-time Latin Grammy-winning engineer, and mixed by Berlin-based heavy psych specialist Richard Behrens.

Line-up

The band functions as a sextet. Brothers Rodolfo and Pedro steer the songs in a jazz-rock direction, while drummer Vitor, who works as a forró percussionist and death metal player, provides the rhythmic foundation.
