Pale Rider
Pale Rider is a Los Angeles band that also describes Redlands, California, as its base for making music. The group works in a style that combines ambient textures, melodic noise, atmospheric layers and harmonic post-punk, and it also fits broader tags including dub, stoner rock, rap, hard rock and Swedish metal.
Formation and lineup
The first album, 2is1, is produced by Rus and is described as almost a solo record. Rus then shares newer material with Thomas, an old friend from the early 1990s, and Thomas contributes to the songs, turning the project into a duo. Rus later records a cover of The Autumns, which leads to contact with the band’s original bass player, Jon, who joins in on bass. The lineup then expands when Rus asks Joe to record drums, and that session develops into full collaboration across the album.
Sound and approach
The group says it treats genre as something to be blended rather than followed strictly. Its music draws on a wide range of influences, including post-punk, shoegaze and long-form ambient music, as well as musical and artistic ideas from the early to late 1990s. The name Pale Rider is explained as symbolic rather than a reference to westerns or biblical imagery: “Rider” stands for the people moving through life together, while “Pale” refers to an original layer of innocence before experience and complexity build up.
Releases and activity
The band has completed a new LP that is ready for mastering, and it is beginning to play live while building its online presence. A second record is also described as nearing completion. The group is positioned around performance, recording and collaboration rather than a fixed finished catalogue.
Other use of the name
There is also a separate Pale Rider rap artist from Seattle, but this is distinct from the Los Angeles band.
Influences mentioned
The band’s stoner rock roots are linked in the text to Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard and Kyuss, and it is also connected to a cover of The Autumns. Its wider musical field includes shoegaze, post-punk and ambient music.
