Omar is the stage name of British soul singer Omar Lye-Fook, a solo artist from Balham, United Kingdom, born in 1968. He is associated with contemporary R&B, neo soul and soul, and is also linked with acid jazz and funk.
Career
Omar begins releasing albums in the early 1990s and builds a catalogue that includes There’s Nothing Like This, Music, For Pleasure, This is Not a Love Song, Best By Far, Sing, (If You Want It) and The Man. His work is often compared with Stevie Wonder’s 1970s recordings.
Recognition and activity
Omar releases his own recordings and tours the UK regularly, with occasional short tours in the United States. He is also held in high regard by artists including Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Common and Stevie Wonder. His releases after For Pleasure are only available as imports for a period.
