Oceans Ate Alaska is a metalcore group from Birmingham, United Kingdom, active since 2011. Their sound sits across emocore, metal, metalcore, post-hardcore and progressive metalcore, and they are known for combining multiple strands of modern metal with unpredictable polyrhythms and contrasting melodic and dissonant passages.

Formation and early releases

The band forms in Birmingham in 2010, with the verified active period beginning in 2011. Original vocalist James Harrison names the group after the 1958 Lituya Bay earthquake and megatsunami in Alaska. In 2012 the band signs to Density Records and releases two EPs on the label.

Label releases and touring

Oceans Ate Alaska signs to Fearless Records in 2014. They appear on Fearless Records’ compilation Punk Goes Pop, Vol. 6 with a cover of Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love”. Their debut album, Lost Isles, appears in 2015. The band then plays the full 2016 Vans Warped Tour.

Line-up changes and later recordings

In December 2016 the band announces that it is entering the studio for a second album and that James Harrison has left the group. Jake Noakes is announced as the new lead vocalist in February 2017. The band releases “Covert” in May 2017 as the first single with Noakes on vocals, followed by “Escapist” in June. Their album Hikari follows in 2017, alongside a video for “Hansha”.
