Nucleus Roots are a reggae and dub group from Manchester. They begin as a studio project built to give a platform to local talent already active in the city, with a focus on reggae. That studio approach expands into a band format, and the group is established in 1996 out of the remains of Manchester punky reggae band Community Charge.

Formation and early line-up

In its early period, Nucleus Roots is a ten-piece reggae band made up of some of the most respected musicians on the UK circuit. The group develops from a studio resource into a performing band, with the catalogue of artists, arrangements and songs growing alongside the studio itself.

Recordings and style

The group releases four reggae albums and becomes known for roots productions described as distinctive and authentic. Their sound sits across reggae, roots reggae, dub and electro dub, and their work is associated with both studio production and band performance.

Collaborations

Nucleus Roots work with a range of established reggae artists in the UK and overseas, including Twinkle Brothers, Misty in Roots, Dub Syndicate, The Natura-ites, Desmond Dekker, Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti and Fredlocks.

Place in Manchester music

The group’s origins are tied to Manchester’s reggae scene, where the project is designed to channel local talent into recorded and live work. Over time, Nucleus Roots develops in both output and reputation within that scene.
