Nile
Nile is an American technical death metal band from Greenville, South Carolina, formed in 1993 and active to the present. The group is associated with brutal death metal, death metal, metal and technical death metal, and is known for combining fast, intricate riffing with a heavy, precise style.
History and line-up
The band forms out of guitarist and vocalist Karl Sanders’ earlier group Morriah. Sanders remains the central songwriter and creative force, while the band goes through a number of line-up changes over its history. Members include Pete Hammoura, Chief Spires, John Ehlers, Dallas Toler-Wade, Tony Laureano, Jon Vesano, George Kollias, Chris Lollis, Brian Kingsland and Daniel Vadim Von. The current line-up includes Sanders, drummer George Kollias, guitarists and vocalists Brian Kingsland and Zach Jeter, and bassist and vocalist Adam Roethlisberger.
Recording and releases
Nile takes its name from the Nile River. Its early releases include a self-titled demo in 1994 and the EPs Festivals of Atonement and Ramses Bringer of War. The first full-length album, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, appears after an initial label closes, and the band later tours with groups such as Incantation and Morbid Angel. Further albums follow with Black Seeds of Vengeance, In Their Darkened Shrines and Annihilation of the Wicked. George Kollias joins before the recording of Annihilation of the Wicked.
The band signs with Nuclear Blast in 2006 and releases Ithyphallic as its first album for the label. Other studio albums include Those Whom the Gods Detest, At the Gate of Sethu, What Should Not Be Unearthed, Vile Nilotic Rites and The Underworld Awaits Us All. Across its career, Nile releases ten studio albums, two compilations, three EPs, two demos, three singles and five music videos. Relapse Records and Napalm Records also feature in the band’s release history.
Themes and style
Nile’s lyrics and imagery draw on Egyptology, ancient Middle Eastern cultures, ancient Near Eastern history, religion, art and the writings of H. P. Lovecraft. Many of the band’s albums include detailed sleeve notes explaining the source of each song’s inspiration. Sanders describes the band’s approach as combining Eastern tonalities with a metal framework, aiming for a cinematic evocation of Ancient Egypt rather than a direct reproduction of historical music. The band often tunes to dropped A.
Recognition and live work
Nile tours extensively in the US and Europe and appears at Maryland Deathfest. Ithyphallic reaches No. 162 on the Billboard 200. The band influences artists including Kittie and Suicide Silence.
