Night of Sevens

Night of Sevens is a Newcastle-based five-piece associated with garage rock, drone rock, stoner rock, indie and alternative music. The group describes itself as a self-contained, self-produced and self-released project, and it presents itself as a numerology-inspired rock ’n’ roll democracy shaped by shared interests in outlaw literature and socialist ideas.

Style and influences

The band’s music combines garage rock, psychedelic rock and drone-driven elements. It is described as drawing on the proto-punk force of The Stooges and the fuzz-heavy avant-psych of Sonic Youth, while also being compared with The Birthday Party, The Fall, The Drones and Wire. Its sound is also associated with dark, lysergic space jams and apocalyptic psychedelia.

Formation and early activity

Night of Sevens plays as a five-piece and begins live activity with its first gig on 07/07/07. The group is based in Newcastle and develops within the city’s independent music scene. It records in a space in the old Tyne Tees building in Newcastle, but when flooding affects that location, the equipment remains undamaged and the band moves into one of the large film studios that once hosts the television music show The Tube.

Recordings and releases

The move into the studio leads to two months of recording for The Flood Sessions, issued as a double EP and documentary on double gatefold CD and through Bandcamp download. In early 2009, after turning down deals from two labels, the band releases its debut single, “Wait For The Red Tape” / “Murder Kiss”, as a limited 7-inch and download. The demo “Television Uniform” also appears on Amazing Radio’s playlist. A full-length album is recorded in the Lake District and is slated for release in 2011.

Live work and reception

Night of Sevens builds a reputation for intense live performances and supports acts including Television Personalities, Harlem, Twisted Wheel, Future of The Left, Sons and Daughters, The Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club, Nine Black Alps, Detroit Social Club, Bad For Lazarus and Sleepy Sun. It also appears at the Evolution Festival and tours in support of its debut single. Coverage from BBC 6 Music, BBC Tyne, BBC Newcastle Introducing, Toonwaves and Drowned in Sound places the band within Tyneside’s independent scene.

Press descriptions

The band receives descriptions that emphasise its garage-rock abrasion, psychedelic character and live impact. It is presented as combining “swagger” with angst, and as a group of “show stealing” performers whose explosive drone-rock and overdriven set closer leave a strong impression.
