Nickodemus is a DJ, producer and party curator from the United States, based in New York and raised between Queens and Long Island. His early musical background comes from a household filled with Motown, disco and Latin music, and he later discovers hip hop through New York radio, especially DJ Red Alert and Marley Marl on 98.7FM. He studies DJ technique from old mixtapes, works as a breakdancer, and also paints murals at Midtown Manhattan club The Red Zone, where he sees DJs such as Kid Capri and David Morales perform.

Style and influences

His sound develops from an interest in the sample-based methods of hip hop and in music from different traditions. He draws inspiration from acts such as Coldcut and labels such as Ninja Tune and Mo'Wax, and his tastes expand through blues, funk, afro-beat, Fela Kuti, India and other global styles. His work is associated with downtempo, chillout, lounge, ambient and Arabic-influenced music.

Club work and events

Nickodemus holds a DJ residency with the Giant Step crew and also plays support slots for artists including The Pharcyde, Gil Scott-Heron, KRS-One and Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers. In 1998, he and Mariano begin the weekly Turntables On The Hudson parties at Chelsea Piers on Manhattan’s west side, which become a long-running New York fixture and lead to first Fridays at Cielo and other events around New York and elsewhere.

Releases and collaborations

His label, Wonderwheel Recordings, issues a number of remixes, and the Turntables On The Hudson series includes eight volumes of mix CDs. He also releases the album Moon People on ESL, and is linked with the project Nickodemus & Osiris, alongside Junebug Productions.
