New spectrum is an Irish-born, Berlin-based producer. The project is an alias used to blur the lines between a wide set of influences, drawing on house, big beat and old school hip hop.

Background

He has spent many years in music production and grows up with a varied musical background. Early influences include house acts such as Modjo and Thomas Bangalter, big beat artists including The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers, and hip hop acts such as A Tribe Called Quest and Run DMC. He later studies music at college, where history classes deepen his interest in the development of music from the 1950s onwards, including the way Kraftwerk develops from krautrock into early electro and helps shape later styles.

As his record collection develops, it includes releases from Thomas Bangalter’s Roulé label, Yazoo’s Upstairs at Eric’s, and much of the production work of The Neptunes, whom he describes as major producers of the last two decades.

Releases and support

His first release, Secret Highway, receives radio play from Pete Tong and Danny Howard on BBC Radio 1, as well as plays on Kiss FM. He later releases the single Different People, which gains support from Fatboy Slim, Solomun, Laurent Garnier, DJ Seinfeld, Anja Schneider and Maceo Plex.
