Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia is an Australian singer-songwriter and actress from Sydney, Australia. Born in 1975, she grows up on the Central Coast north of Sydney and is the second of four daughters of an Italian father and an Australian mother.

Career

As a teenager, Imbruglia appears in the soap opera Neighbours before moving into music. Her debut single, Torn, reaches number 2 in the UK singles chart and becomes the most played song on radio in 1998. The song is written by Anne Preven, Scott Cutler and Phil Thornalley, and earlier versions are recorded by Ednaswap, Lis Sørensen and Trine Rein before Imbruglia's recording becomes the best-known version. It becomes her signature song.

Her debut album, Left of the Middle, is released in 1997 and becomes a million-seller. Its follow-up singles include Big Mistake, Wishing I Was There and Smoke.

In 1999, she appears with Tom Jones on his duet album Reload, performing a cover of INXS' Never Tear Us Apart. She also contributes tracks to several soundtracks and compilation albums, including Troubled by the Way We Came Together on Go! O.S.T., Identify on Stigmata O.S.T., Cold Air on Y Tu Mamá También, and a radio remix of Wrong Impression on Mr. Deeds O.S.T.. She records Pineapple Head for She Will Have Her Way and All The Magic for the Winx Club soundtrack.

Albums and singles

Imbruglia's second studio album, White Lilies Island, is released in 2001. It is less successful than her debut, but it produces the UK singles That Day, Wrong Impression and Beauty On The Fire. She returns to acting in 2002 with a supporting role in the film Johnny English.

Her third studio album, Counting Down The Days, is released in 2005 and reaches number one in the UK album chart in its first week. The singles from it include Shiver, which becomes her longest-running UK single since Torn and tops the UK airplay chart, and the title track Counting Down The Days.

After that, she changes labels and releases the compilation Glorious: The Singles 97-07, which includes five new tracks and is promoted by Glorious. Her fourth studio album, Come to Life, is released in 2009, preceded by the video for Wild About It. Its first official single is Want, written with Daniel Johns, Gary Clark and Chris Martin, with Johns credited as Kat Kourtney. The planned single Scars is later sent to UK radio.

Collaborations and personal life

Imbruglia marries Daniel Johns, the lead singer of Silverchair, in 2003. Johns also contributes to her song Want. Her album Counting Down The Days and other recordings connect her with producer Phil Thornalley, who is involved in the history of Torn and produces her album.
