After forming, the group signs to Eyeball Records and releases its debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. It then moves to Reprise Records and releases Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in 2004, an album that becomes a commercial success and later reaches platinum status. In 2006, the band releases the concept album The Black Parade, which receives generally favourable reviews. Its fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, follows in 2010 and is also well received.
The group later issues a series of singles collected as Conventional Weapons, and a greatest hits set, May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits (2001–2013), appears in 2014 and includes previously unreleased material. After that, the band returns with The Foundations of Decay in 2022. Its recorded output is associated with Eyeball Records, Reprise Records and Blow the Doors Off the Jersey Shore Music, Inc.
