Muzi

Muzi is a South African DJ and electronic artist from Empangeni, South Africa, born in 1991. He is associated with afro house, house, gqom and electronic music, and releases music on WE.THE.BUNDU.

Early life

He is born in Mbabane, Swaziland, and moves with his family to southwest Atlanta when he is young. His mother meets his father while studying at Atlanta’s AU Center, later returns to her home country to care for family, and gives birth to Muzi there. His father gives him the American name Billy-Ray Little Jr. as part of an effort to become an official United States citizen.

Musical beginnings

Growing up in southwest Atlanta, he listens to a wide range of music, including country, dubstep, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Outkast. At high school he forms an a cappella group with friends, performing Boyz II Men covers at open mics and talent shows. The group develops into a songwriting team that writes and records original material.

Career

He signs with RCAM, alongside The Indigo Girls, and writes for several producers including The Underdogs. He earns his first major placements through title tracks on several releases in 2010. He later begins a solo career with beatsmith Shoden!, and Somnolence follows from that collaboration.
