Momentum

Momentum is a progressive band from Iceland, active since 2003. The group begins as an extreme black/death metal project and later develops a sound that combines post-rock atmosphere with heavy, layered metal textures. Its music draws on influences such as Isis, Cult of Luna and Neurosis, and uses both soft singing and clean passages alongside harsh, discordant sections and dense sound design.

Style and themes

The band’s work moves between bone-crushing heaviness and more spacious, reflective passages. Its songs use intense vocal layering, staccato bursts and additional eerie textures, with a strong contrast between relaxed melodic sections and powerful guitar-driven climaxes. The lyrics and concepts are shaped around a surreal journey through the subconscious, presented through the artwork, lyrics and overall concept associated with frontman Hörður.

Releases

Momentum releases a debut album, Whetting Occam’s Razor, and later issues Herbivore. Its work is described as moving through ideas about humanity’s place in the universe, combining anger, awe and wider philosophical themes.

Background

The group’s development runs from its earliest black/death metal beginnings into a more expansive progressive style. It is one of several acts using the name Momentum, but this version is the Icelandic group active from 2003 onwards.
