Mike Peters is a Welsh rock musician from Prestatyn, known as the lead singer of The Alarm. Born Michael Leslie Peters in 1959, he dies in 2025.

Career

Peters first comes to prominence in the mid-1980s with The Alarm, then leaves the band in 1991 to begin a solo career. After a Brixton Academy gig, he retreats to a church in North Wales to write new material. More than a year later he returns, contacts The Alarm’s fan club and begins touring again, while also funding his own fan organisation, the MPO, which stands for Mike Peters Organization.

In 1992 he stages The Gathering, a weekend event in his hometown of Rhyl. The event continues in Llandudno. His first solo album, Breathe, becomes an underground success. Around this time he is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphatic cancer, which he keeps private while touring. After returning to his doctors, the cancer is found to be in remission. He then writes and records Regeneration, followed by Feel Free in 1996.

Other projects

Over the years Peters performs with several other acts, including Coloursound and Dead Men Walking. In 2000 he reforms The Alarm with Craig Adams of The Mission, James Stevenson of Gene Loves Jezebel and Steve Grantley of The Stiff Little Fingers. The reformed group releases albums including In the Poppyfields and Under Attack.

He also joins Big Country for their UK tour in 2011, releases the single Another Country with the band, and appears on the album The Journey in 2013. The verified members list also includes Seventeen and Mike Peters and The Poets.

Recognition and public roles

Peters is appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Clwyd in 2008. He receives an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to cancer care. In 2022 he says his chronic lymphocytic leukaemia has relapsed and that he is receiving chemotherapy at the North Wales Cancer Centre.
