Migos

Migos is an American hip hop group from Lawrenceville, United States, active from 2008 to 2023. The group consists of Quavo, Takeoff and Offset. Quavo is from Athens, Georgia, while Offset and Takeoff are born and raised in Lawrenceville.

Background and style

Migos forms in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 2008 and becomes associated with the development of trap music in the 2010s. The group also brings elements of North Atlanta culture into mainstream music. Its listed genres include hip hop, southern hip hop and trap.

The group is managed by Coach K and works frequently with producers DJ Durel, Murda Beatz, Zaytoven and Buddah Bless.

Singles and chart success

Migos first draws wider attention with the 2013 single “Versace”, from the mixtape Y.R.N. (Young Rich Niggas). Drake later remixes the track, helping it reach the Billboard Hot 100. Other singles include “Fight Night” and “Look at My Dab”. “Bad and Boujee”, featuring Lil Uzi Vert, reaches number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2016. In 2017, “MotorSport”, with Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, reaches the top ten, followed in 2018 by “Stir Fry” and “Walk It Talk It” featuring Drake, both of which also reach the top ten.

Albums

The group signs with Quality Control Music and 300 Entertainment for its debut studio album, Yung Rich Nation (2015), which peaks at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and receives positive reviews. Its second album, Culture (2017), debuts at number one and includes “Bad and Boujee”. After moving from 300 Entertainment to a joint venture with Motown and Capitol Records in February 2017, Migos releases Culture II (2018), which also reaches number one and sells about 200,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. Culture III (2021) peaks at number two on the Billboard 200.

Other appearances

In 2016, Migos appears as fictionalised versions of themselves in the first season of the television series Atlanta.

End of the group

Takeoff is fatally shot outside a bowling alley in Houston on November 1, 2022, and the group disbands in 2023.
