Menace

Menace are a UK punk band from Islington, active from 1976. The group forms in London’s early punk scene and is associated with oi and punk rock, with a line-up that includes Steve Tannett, Morgan Webster, Charlie Casey, Noel Martin, John Lacey, Andrew Tweedie and Albert Awful.

Formation and early activity

The band forms in 1976 at the Hope and Anchor in Islington, when Morgan Webster meets the other members. They soon play the Roxy and other early punk venues such as the Vortex and the Hope and Anchor. Their set is described as high-energy and direct, and they build a following among both punks and skinheads. They are often cited as one of the first bands to bring those audiences together, although that crossover is presented as something that develops naturally rather than as a deliberate aim.

Releases and label history

Menace first sign to Miles Copeland’s Illegal Records and debut in 1977 with the single Screwed Up, backed with Insane Society. The release is noted for its working-class slogans and for a sound that is more musically developed than some listeners might expect from the style.

Reception and place in punk history

The band pre-date Sham 69 and the Cockney Rejects, although those groups later overtake them in wider popularity. Early coverage from the punk press is enthusiastic, with Sniffin’ Glue describing them as the best punk band in England at the time after seeing their early shows. The group’s reputation rests on its blunt style, strong live following and its position in the first wave of British punk.
