Masicka
Masicka is a Jamaican deejay, singer and songwriter associated with reggae, dancehall and hip-hop influenced music. He comes from Portmore, St. Catherine, where he gets his name from his “Sin City” neighbourhood. His style is described as lyrically intricate and melodic, with a flow that draws on reggae/dancehall rhythms as well as hip-hop and pop.
Career
Masicka develops a reputation in the Jamaican underground scene before wider attention builds around him. He is known by the nickname “sicka than dem” and is later described by reggae peers as “The Future”. His songs gain growing support among reggae and dancehall listeners, while his internet presence and radio play on major Jamaican stations such as Irie FM help him reach new audiences. His work also crosses genre boundaries, attracting listeners from outside reggae and dancehall.
He works with One Motion Music, alongside co-founders Addis Pablo and Leon Brown, and helps shape the label’s reggae/hip-hop direction. The label is presented as a vehicle for mixing genres and collaborating with artists more broadly, both in Jamaica and internationally. Through this partnership, Masicka develops his sound with a team of producers, musicians and artists connected to the label.
Recordings
Masicka records the club single “Loose Control”, co-produced by Ras I Musique and One Motion Music. At the same time, he is preparing both an album and a mixtape for release. He also has songs that are written and/or performed by him and contribute to his growing reputation in reggae and dancehall.
Style and profile
His music is described as a fusion of contemporary reggae/dancehall and global hip-hop/pop trends, shaped partly by early exposure to different genres in Jamaica. His lyrics are noted for being colourful and easy for listeners to follow, while still being technically intricate. His audience continues to grow as he uses this hybrid style to build a profile across genres.
