Mark E

Mark E is a Birmingham-based DJ and producer from Wolverhampton whose work centres on house music, with connections to deep house, disco, nu disco and electronic dance music. He develops a deliberately restrained style built around steady rhythms, simple structures and a warm, understated feel. His early interest in club music begins in adolescence, when he hears house through the wider rave culture associated with Manchester’s Madchester period.

Early development

He first encounters house through Bizarre Inc’s “Playing With Knives”, which leads him into the genre. He later absorbs influences from the Wolverhampton scene, including exposure to figures such as John Kelly and Frankie Knuckles, before moving to Birmingham for university and becoming part of a larger club environment there.

Production and releases

Mark E’s first productions are edits, often pitched at a moderate tempo and marked by a warm, subdued sound. One of these, “Scared”, a ten-minute rework of Womack & Womack’s “Baby, I’m Scared of You”, draws the attention of Gilles Peterson on BBC radio and helps establish his profile. He then issues a string of vinyl-only releases before moving further into original production. His own label, MERC, becomes part of that development.

Labels and collaborations

A remix of Matthew Dear’s “Little People (Black City)” brings him to Ghostly/Spectral, and his first artist album, Stone Breaker, is released through that association. He is also associated with Sonar Kollektiv.
