Marine

Marine are a Belgian new wave band from Brussels active between 1980 and 1983. The group consists of Marco Laguna, Paul Delnoy and Marc Desmare, and they sit within the post-punk and funk-influenced side of early 1980s new wave.

Style and influences

Marine are associated with a “frantic funk” approach, and their sound is linked to the post-punk scene in the UK. Their music also shows an interest in French variety. Comparisons are drawn with The Clash, particularly in the vocal approach on tracks such as “Animal In My Head” and “Remember Caribou”, while “Same Beat” is described as closer in feel to Haircut One Hundred.

Recordings

The group releases four singles and later has its complete studio recordings collected on a compilation. Among the songs singled out are “Life In Reverse”, “Turn Up The Meter” and “She’s Stirring Up”. Another track, “Kiss My Knee”, appears as a posthumous single and is recorded by session players rather than the band itself.

Context

Marine are a short-lived project, but they are notable enough to be cited as an influence on Josef K. Marc Desmare is also remembered for a highly unusual attempt to avoid Belgian national service by asking his bandmates to break his foot with a hockey bat.
