Mahotella Queens

Mahotella Queens are a South African mbaqanga vocal group active since 1964. The group consists of Mildred Mangxola, Nobesuthu Mbadu and Hilda Tloubatla. They become known for combining traditional songs with high-energy, funky, dance-oriented music, and are widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most successful vocal groups.

Career

The group first comes to prominence in the 1960s as backing singers for Mahlathini, known as the “Lion of Soweto”. They record with Mahlathini as well as releasing albums under their own name. Through their profile, they also become influential figures in the struggle against apartheid.

Recording and recognition

After Mahlathini dies in 2000, Mahotella Queens record Sebai Bai in his honour. The album brings them further international attention and earns them a Womex award. They continue to record and tour, including regular performances with fellow South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Their recordings are issued on African Cream Music.
