Maddie Jones

Maddie Jones is a Welsh singer-songwriter from Caerphilly, in South Wales. Her work sits within singer-songwriter, art pop, art rock and rock, and she is also described as an acoustic and alternative artist. She is active as a solo performer and guitarist, with a style that draws on an experimental and eclectic approach to writing.

Early work and releases

Jones self-releases and co-produces her early recordings. Her first EP, Let It Out, appears in 2010, followed by Mr Walrus in 2013. Her debut album, Vita Brevis, is released in 2014. The album is recorded in Cardiff and features Jones playing several instruments on her own material, including guitars, synths, ukulele and clarinet.

Collaborators and development

Vita Brevis is made with producer Charlie Francis, whose credits include R.E.M., Future of the Left and Sweet Baboo. Jones is also mentored by Amy Wadge, who has co-written with Ed Sheeran and Lewis Watson. Wadge describes Jones as a strong songwriter and live performer.

Live performances and recognition

Jones wins Cardiff’s Big Gig Competition in 2013. In the same year, she performs at Sŵn Festival, Glastonbury and Brecon Jazz. Her live history also includes appearances at Ronnie Scott’s, Bristol’s Colston Hall and Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach. She supports Stephen Fretwell, Jake Morley and Caroline Harrison among others.

Musical background

Jones says her influences range from the 1970s records in her parents’ collection to world, jazz and classical music studied at Nottingham University. Her songs draw on personal themes including temptation, love, fear and loss, and she presents herself as a songwriter with a broad and varied musical background.
