Machete is the stage name of a US jungle DJ also known as DJ Machete. He begins his career in 1992 under the name DJ Rob G., playing hip-hop at after-hours clubs in Los Angeles including No-Doz, What? and Caffiend.

Career

He becomes part of the early Los Angeles underground rave scene as jungle and drum and bass develop from English techno-breakbeat culture. His interest shifts toward jungle after hearing breakbeats combined with hip-hop and reggae vocal samples. Around 1993 and 1994, he helps form Junglist Platoon with a close group of friends. The crew becomes visible at underground events, where it distributes stickers and wears matching T-shirts.

At the suggestion of his peers, he changes his DJ name from Rob G. to Machete, a name that reflects his cutting and mixing style.

Context

The name Machete is also used by several other acts, including hip-hop, punk, metal and rock groups in different countries. This Machete is the Los Angeles jungle and drum and bass DJ associated with that scene.
